Dr Robert Field is a psychotherapist with something to prove. He meets Victor Harrow, a schizophrenic and a voice hearer, incarcerated for killing his father and his adopted sister. Dr Field is convinced he can treat Harrow but it is the psychotherapist who changes.
Harrow was a young high-flier but became plagued by an inner voice named Gonzago. As Harrow became increasingly tormented he found himself in close proximity to the deaths of his brother and his best friend. He also committed self-trepanation before turning on his family.
Dr Field moves too fast and forces Harrow to confront his crimes, with devastating consequences. More tellingly, Dr Field hears echoes in Harrow's case, echoes of his own past and his relationship with his own adopted sister.
